When I first began cultivating a connection with my Spirit Guides, Angels and Ancestors I’d often ask for signs to serve as validation of divine presence and guidance.
"If I receive a sign, I’ll know such a connection to be true!” I’d think, eager to begin reaching out - and receiving guidance from - Archangel Michael and co.
Eager beaver that I was (am!), I’d wait, and wait, and wait, eventually wondering “um, Guides… why such radio silence? Not even a little sign? A teeny tiny sign? Not even the quickest of moments, the briefest of glimpses, the slightest of sounds?”
Exasperated and disheartened I’d wonder if I wasn’t quite cut out to converse with or sense Spirit after all. Maybe such a connection was only possible for a select few, and I just didn’t have a golden ticket to secure myself a place at the party.
Looking back, I realise it wasn’t so much a case of Spirit ignoring my requests or shutting the door on my questions – I just didn’t quite know how to listen.
Releasing expectations in order to hear Spirit speak
I placed pretty rigid restrictions around the ways in which I assumed signs from Spirit would arrive.
Surely I’d see a loved one appear by my side, or I’d feel a supportive hand on my shoulder or perhaps hear a distinct “you’re not alone!” booming around the room.
Surely a sign would be something obvious, something out of the ordinary, something different and distinct and, well, pretty darn mind-blowing.
And while it’s absolutely possible for Spirit to communicate with us in such a way, sometimes our assumptions and expectations mean amazing signs from Spirit are missed, dismissed, ignored, often accidentally. Oops.
When in truth, Spirit is super keen to connect with us!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about signs and nudges from our pals beyond the physical realm it’s that Spirit is wonderfully clever, creative and so very joyful in their approach to answering our questions and saying hello; so very eager to reach out to us in unexpected, sometimes subtle yet always beautiful ways should we only open our hearts and minds to the creative methods and means employed.
The spontaneity of Spirit really hit home for me recently when it came to making contact with my beloved Grandpa Jack, who passed away seven or so years ago.
Jack always had an amazing ghost story or two to tell when I was little. I’d sit at his feet with my cousins, all of us wide-eyed and transfixed by his spooky tales of ghostly children running along the corridor at night and haunted goings-on in various houses he’d lived in before our time.
Thoroughly fascinated (yet, admittedly, ever so slightly terrified!), my interest in all things supernatural stemmed from such storytelling, and what with Halloween approaching and all things spooky in the air Jack and his ghostly stories have been very much on my mind lately.
“I thought Jack would have been in touch by now,” I pondered during a recent conversation with Chris, smiling at the thought of my Grandpa finding a way to say hi – after all, we both shared a love for a good ghost story so why not reach out from the other side and play a little spooky trick or two as a way of saying hello?
“Jack, if you fancy popping by and sending me a sign I’m always ready and willing to listen!” I announced, before going about my day as usual.
Every so often I’d think of Jack and smile, knowing he’d make contact in his own time.
A week or so later I decided to take a spontaneous afternoon away from my little office and instantly knew where I wanted to go – where I needed to go – during my free time. The location popped into my head and wouldn't budge.
Before setting off I pulled a quick oracle card for my daily draw: “Remain open to receiving signs from Spirit.”
“Cool” I thought, silently affirming “Spirit is always sending me signs in many magical ways” before turning my thoughts towards cheese fries and crystal shopping (a pretty awesome way to spend a windy Autumn afternoon, no?!)
Now, here’s the thing. Spirit knows us really, really well.
Spirit knows the best way to catch our attention, often when we're least expecting it.
Because when we’re not expecting something, or obsessing over the whys and the hows of a sign, we’re operating in a super receptive mode.
Half a plate of cheese fries later (so good!) I went to take a sip from my drink and glanced absentmindedly at my phone, perched next to my plate.
As I did so I saw, for the first time, something strange.
Carved faintly on the table top, right in front of me, between my cheese fries and soda, were four letters:
J A C K
“Hey… Does that say Jack?” Chris asked, following my gaze.
My left ear beginning to buzz, heart hammering in my chest - I knew, I just knew, that Grandpa Jack was stepping forwards to say hello. And laughing at the look of surprise on my face, no doubt!
I also knew that Jack had a hand to play in ensuring I found my way to this very restaurant, this very table, this very seat, at this very moment in time.
Spirit knew this would be the perfect way to deliver a message to me, and because I released all expectations after asking for a sign I was able to trust the process enough to allow it to unfold in its own divine time.
The magic of ordinary
Such an occurrence really brought home to me the way in which our Guides, Angels and Ancestors are able to use everyday objects, circumstances and surroundings as a way of reaching out and establishing heartfelt connection.
Messages and signs might not always involve a loved one appearing out of thin air or something equally as confronting or extraordinary, but perhaps that's because Spirit communication is actually really rather, well, ordinary.
Signs, messages, hellos from heaven are open to us constantly, should we only be willing to redefine our understanding of what such messages might look, sound, feel, be like.
When we take time to release our expectations and to look up (or down at our cheese fries!), inviting Spirit to surprise us, Spirit finds us.
Without a doubt, Spirit answers and Spirit finds us.
Soulful sign or 'just' a coincidence?
We might always have moments of “but is this really a sign, or…”, sometimes second guessing and dismissing such instances as mere coincidence (although, coincidence = Spirit in my book!), wondering if our sign isn’t quite clear enough to be “real”, valid, true.
Hey, we're human - we like to question!
Ultimately we have a choice when faced with something seemingly random yet so very meaningful: we can determine such instances to be unimportant, silly, insignificant or we can decide to embrace the joy, comfort and wonder such times provide.
How miraculous, how magical that life should conspire to bring us split seconds in which everything slots together so perfectly!
That, to me, is Spirit in action – the flutter in our stomach, the “hold on a second…” pause, the intake of breath and the deep down, intuitive recognition that yes, this moment carries meaning. Yes, this moment in special.
Yes, this moment is Spirit.
With love, gratitude and so much joy,
